For a great many men, the occurrence of erectile dysfunction is directly associated with stress-related factors like smoking, high blood pressure and diseases such as diabetes. Published in the International Journal of Andrology^†, this study was conducted in order to identify the markers of oxidative stress in erectile dysfunction and analyze the role of dietary antioxidants, specifically pomegranate extract. The experiment was performed by first artificially inducing E.D. in rabbit test subjects and then administering a placebo (tap water) to one group and a formula of pomegranate extract to a separate group. After a period of 8 weeks, penile blood flow and erectile activity were measured.

Results:

"Pomegranate extract significantly improved intracavernosal blood flow, erectile activity, smooth muscle relaxation and fibrosis of the atherosclerotic group in comparison with the atherosclerotic group receiving placebo… Pomegranate extract appeared more effective in diminishing oxidative products, preventing SOD and AR gene upregulation, and protecting mitochondrial, endothelial and caveolae structural integrity of the atherosclerotic group."
